10 Harmless-Looking Video Game Enemies That Completely Wrecked You

2. Demon Rabbit - Shadow Warrior (2013)

In classic Shadow Warrior rabbits were the object of a bit of characteristically bawdy humour. Being rabbits they would mate like rabbits, much to protagonist Lo Wang’s amusement, and in keeping with that humour they (apart from one nightmare-fuel Easter Egg) could be mercilessly slaughtered without repercussion.

The 2013 reboot repeated the joke, but this time the rabbits get their chance at payback. Kill up to three of them and the next one might Hulk out, turn black and start crackling with demonic energy. As if that weren’t disconcerting enough a heavy metal – yes heavy metal – track strikes up to let you know you’ve just provoked the wrath of the Devil’s bunny.

And the Demon Rabbit is tough, shrugging off gunfire with ease and requiring multiple sword strikes to kill, not easy when you’re facing something that’s small, fast and can teleport. If you weren’t expecting it, it could very easily kill you.

It’s a hilarious throwback to the original game (and, incidentally, a certain Monty Python sketch) and a clever antidote to ye olde gamer pastime of killing hapless NPCs for sport.
