7. Red Dead Redemption

2010 was an absolutely monster year for gaming. No less than three of the top ten released in this decade’s first year, with Red Dead Redemption just breaking the Metacritic all time top 50 in 49th place. The game was a stroke of genius, taking a long dead genre and reviving it in the best possible way.
You have to suspect that the only reason we haven’t seen many games trying to cash in on the Western genre post Marston is because they knew they’d be unfavourably compared to Red Dead. Technically a sequel to Red Dead Revolver, the game essentially stood out on its own and dared anyone to challenge it.
Along with fellow Rockstar behemoth Grand Theft Auto IV (a 2008 release and therefore exempt here), Red Dead played a key part in making the open world genre the definitive staple of this decade. It’s hard to get right, and we’ve been served up more than a few duds, but the wealth of open world titles above show how amazing games can be when they get it right.
