10 Highest-Rated Video Games On Metacritic - Ranked
4. Super Mario Galaxy
Metacritic Score: 97
There's an argument to be made that the 3D platformer is the quintessential video game. Just the right amount of story, plenty of level variation, a plethora of enjoyable abilities and characters you'll remember for the rest of your life.
Super Mario Galaxy absolutely fits that description, its control scheme also having a couple of motion-based flicks to dispatch enemies, alongside loading Mario into an interplanetary star-cannon and firing by shaking the Wiimote. Basically, it's a simplistic control scheme designed to put the focus on the worlds themselves; which more than works when you'll start getting fired between hugely varied planets every few moments.
Everything you love about Mario's landmark 3D movement is present and correct, with the sort of world variety and charm only Nintendo could put together from a decade of experimentation.
Super Mario Galaxy would be the finest 3D platformer of all time, but it was usurped by another, only three years later...
