10 Horror Video Games Dying To Be Remade

3. The Thing

The Suffering
Computer Artworks

The Thing was a stunning survival horror experience, with its innovative mechanics that randomly selected which NPCs would turn out to be Thing beasts, as opposed to wholly scripted events.

Following on directly from John Carpenter's 1982 film, you play as Captain Blake, part of a US Special Forces team sent to investigate what happened to the Antarctic research team from the film. The story and the setting are already stellar, borrowing the atmosphere and design from Carpenter's classic. More praiseworthy is how developer Computer Artworks didn't take a back seat, resting on the laurels of the IP they'd acquired.

The mechanics featured in this title are astounding for such an early release though they are especially impressive for being effectively integrated with each other and the narrative.

There's an exposure mechanic, limiting the time you can spend outside, forcing players into potential dangerous interiors; a squad system; both fear and trust systems; the aforementioned infection system; and the requirement for Walkers to be set alight to finish them off.

All in all, The Thing was a stellar game in 2002, and a remake that could push its potential even further would be set to be one of horror's finest.
