When Pokemon GO took the world by storm this past summer, interest in a Pokemon movie surged, quickly leading to the announcement that Legendary Entertainment, the studio behind some the biggest genre films today, had made a deal with The Pokemon Company to make the first ever live-action Pokemon film.

Contrary to expectations, this will not be a typical Pokemon adventure filled with trainers and gym battles. Instead it will be based on The Great Detective Pikachu, which was just released in Japan for the 3DS earlier this year.

Due to the immense popularity of the franchise, Detective Pikachu has been fast-tracked into production. Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch, known for writing Guardians of the Galaxy and Gravity Falls respectively, have been hired to pen the script together. Dean Israelite, Tim Miller and Robert Rodriguez, among others, were rumored to be considered for potential directors, though just recently news broke that Rob Letterman, whose credits include Goosebumps and Monsters Vs. Aliens, is set to direct.

Little else is currently known, but expect casting announcements relatively soon, as filming is expected to begin in 2017 in order to hit a 2018 release window. While this isn't the live-action Pokemon movie many wanted nor expected, should it be successful (which it most certainly will), this could be the beginning of a new live-action film franchise set in the Pokemon universe, which would be a huge step for video game movies going forward.
