Mortal Kombat 4 expanded on the franchise's mythos and introduced several key characters to the series including Quan Chi and Shinnok. However, one character that players were curious about was Shinnok's general, Reiko. Because there were few details about his backstory, some speculated there was more to this enigmatic character than it seemed.

So, when players completed the game as Reiko, they were astonished by what they saw. In this ending, the Outworld soldier passes through a portal that leads to Emperor Shao Kahn's throne room. After sitting on the throne, the former Emperor's mask lowers onto Reiko's face before his eyes emit an ominous glow.

Because Kahn was supposedly dead at this point, gamers debated endlessly behind the meaning of this scene? Is Reiko the reincarnation of Shao Kahn. Is Reiko his son? Did Kahn actually die?

Even though the developers created this ending as a joke, fans obsessed about it for years. The issue was finally put to rest in Mortal Kombat: Deception when Reiko reveals to the player that the reason why he wore Kahn's helmet is because... he like's wearing it. That is the entire reason.
