10 Hugely Beloved Video Game Sidekicks - Ranked From Worst To Best

3. Garrus Vakarian (Mass Effect)

Cortana voice assistant
Bioware

The straight-talking Turian with a heart of gold has long been a favourite of Mass Effect fans. Whether it’s his no-nonsense attitude towards criminals, his willingness to break the rules to achieve justice or his incredible combat skills, Garrus has so many qualities that would make him the star of the show, were the Commander not around to steal the spotlight. Also, he straight-up shrugs off a mech-powered rocket to the face.

It helps that he’s around in every Mass Effect game – you can be sure that both the Commander and the Normandy would have suffered a lot more punishment had Garrus not been around with his calibrations. And you really sense the camaraderie between Garrus and Shepard, especially by the third game – it’s no wonder that he’s usually the first choice of romantic interest for a female Shepard. Hell, if I had it my way, he’d be the first port of call for a male Shepard, too.

Not only does Garrus have a great relationship with Shepard, as we said before he’s also a brilliant asset in combat. With his sniper skills, tech abilities and access to Concussion Shot, he’s virtually guaranteed a slot on any squad the Commander puts out.

Here’s hoping he appears in Andromeda, too.
