Joel from The Last of Us is one of the most interesting and morally complex characters of the past few years, so it makes sense that public opinion is split on whether he comes out of Naughty Dog's opus smelling of roses or ends up as public enemy number one.

Either way it's pretty clear that there's something really messed up with our apocalyptic protagonist, but for once, it isn't just because of his hefty body count.

No, the way he treats others, and the way he he manipulates companion Ellie into trusting him, is an entirely other ball game. Suspicious of everyone he comes across, Joel threatens even the friendliest of survivors on his journey across America, at one point almost murdering an innocent looter right in front of his own brother.

But of course, his ultimate act of villainy comes right at the end, when Joel murders everyone in the Firefly base (supposedly the only "good guys" left in the world of The Last of Us) sacrificing ever being able to create a humanity-saving cure in order to rescue Ellie.

Not only that, but he then proceeds to lie to her about what he's done just so he doesn't lose a second daughter, cementing him as one of the most selfish characters in gaming.
