Each entry explored so far has an opening that managed to fumble one or two details regarding pacing, story, gameplay, or visuals. But then there's Deadly Premonition, which somehow manages to check all those boxes, alienating many players into thinking it'll be a piece of garbage.

Deadly Premonition opens up in a way that is not indicative of the rest of the game, i.e. dull-as-hell. In this first level, you'll meander through a rainy woodland about as visually stimulating as a busted-up old shed, playing with the game's awful shooting mechanics.

The dodgy combat is an instant turn-off, as there's little to do in the game at first other than walk and shoot, and it can't even do that well. Does it look good? No! Does it play well? No! Is the story interesting? Not at first, no! Then why even bother playing it?

Well, anyone who makes it through this dire intro will be treated to a wonderfully bonkers, Lynchian world that feels like Twin Peaks on coccaine. The game's appeal is mountainous once you've spent enough time in it, as its fun characters, delightfully schlocky B-movie qualities, and unpredictability are a blast.
