10 Incredible Games That Make TERRIBLE First Impressions
6. The Last Of Us Part II
Spoiler alert!
Hey, did you love The Last of Us? Sure you did. Everyone did. It was a masterpiece. What did you like about it? Besides the gameplay, probably the core relationship between Joel and Ellie, the main characters, right? Great, so why not start off the second game by having one of them brutally killed and not allowing you to do anything about it? That sounds like fun!
Yes, it's safe to say that the decision to kill off Joel in the game's first act was bold. In fact, it was so bold that it caused widespread anger and frustration, as many gamers felt betrayed and didn't want to play the rest of the game.
Of course, those who decided to rage quit right after this emotionally damaging scene missed out on a compelling title that told a beautiful story about the futility of revenge and played just as well as the previous game.
Killing off Joel might have been poorly received, but it did make a strong point about the consequences of his actions and kick-started the game's major themes. Still, it's not a welcoming way to start the sequel to a seminal game.
