7. Ōkami
Ōkami is a masterpiece of a video game. It's an artistically profound and richly sourced exploration of Japanese folklore and mythology. It is also wrapped up with entertaining gameplay and an art style that can bring you to tears. That's what you'll feel once you've finished the game, but you'll likely be thinking, "damn, this is boring," when you first get started.
This woefully underappreciated PS2 classic opens with a tutorial to guide you into the world. That seems all well and good, but this poorly paced introduction throws you right into walls of exposition before flip flopping so dramatically between gameplay and explanatory dialogue that you'll start grinding your teeth.
Players who hopped on hoping to play as a cool wolf spirit only to be forced to read paragraphs of text were instantly taken aback. This is supposed to be a fun game, not homework; why is there so much to learn?
Naturally, those patient players who were willing to sit through this stop-and-start introduction were greatly rewarded. But no one would blame you if you took this disc out and opted for something more direct.
