10 Incredible Video Game Intros (That Made You Stop Playing The Second Time Around)
3. The Boring Snowy Escapades - Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 is considered a masterpiece of video game storytelling. Its characters are lifelike, its setting is deeply atmospheric, and everything you experience in the game only immerses you deeper and deeper.
The intro of the game, happening in the snowy town of Colter, is no exception. This location portrays the gang’s struggle in their refuge with a great sense of nuance right off the bat.
The only problem is that in trying to show how long Dutch and company are forced to endure the harsh winter climate, it also makes the player wait an awfully long time to get to the actual game.
The first time you play through the intro, you don’t really notice it that much. Red Dead 2 gives you just enough agency and entices you with just enough interesting plot points that you can come out of Colter anticipating what will happen next.
Annoyingly, when you already know what’s going to happen, the intro is just LONG. Each mission and story beat feels awfully outstretched, especially since the Colter chapter strips you of some of the game’s most basic mechanics.
It’s like you’re struggling in the snowstorm yourself, which... points for accuracy, I guess, but still.
