Somewhat of a parody, Organ Trail is a remake of the educational classic, Oregon Trail, initially released for free on browsers, and later rereleased as ‘The Director’s Cut’ on iOS, Steam and PlayStation 4.

In the game, players must travel across the country towards a distant sanctuary, avoiding zombies, managing resources, overcoming challenges and making ‘choose-your-own-adventure’ style decision, each of which has resounding consequences for the party.

Visually, the game is bursting with personality, the pixelated visuals absolutely charming, accentuated by the music, which manages to convey a decent amount of emotion despite its limited range.

There are also plenty of features, including upgrades and boss fights, several of which are surprisingly memorable, the gameplay minimalist but engaging. It’s also fun to name a party after all your friends and watch them get eaten, or dysentery.

The original was always fun (for some, at least) so adding zombies and a post-apocalyptic setting only improves things, sacrificing the education benefits for pixelated blood & gore, which is a fine trade in my opinion.
