10 Intense Video Game Horror Chase Sequences

6. The Spider - Limbo

Limbo game
Playdead

One cautionary look at the hairy appendage attempting to skewer Limbo's nameless protagonist, and you know exactly what's about to happen. Arachnophobes, despite their deepest hopes that Playdead wouldn't have a poor boy (let alone the player), chased by Shelob's distant cousin know their impending encounter to be true.

The writing's on the wall, then, but even with all that (purposeful) foreboding in place, the moment Limbo's eight-legged freak drags itself into full view from the shadows genuinely elicits expletives to escape your lips regardless. Was that the developer's intention all along? To make players aware of the spider's existence, but nothing of its intentions or eventual actions? Considering the pitch-perfect delivery of everything else, the only correct answer is, yes - absolutely.
