10 iPad Games That Are As Good As Anything On Consoles Right Now

3. FTL: Faster Than Light

Let's face it, at some point in your life you've sat and wondered just how good you'd be as a Starship Captain. Sitting in a comfy chair in the middle of your sitting room, swivelling around to tell your imaginary communications officer to put the hail on screen, before throwing a few snappy one liners to your alien adversaries and barking commands to the rest of your intrepid bridge crew. Thanks to Faster Than Light though, you can now do that without the fear of being walked in on or standing on the cat. You'll cruise around the galaxy, organise your crew, maintain your ship's systems, and skirmish with space pirates on the day-to-day. All while running across the stars to escape an entire fleet that's chasing you. The main beauty of the game is that it's much less of a story to be played through, and more of a challenge to be completed. There are no saves, for example, and once you've been blown up, suffocated, starved or whatever else, you'll have to start again. However the entire adventure is randomly generated, meaning next time you'll still not know what to face, all you can hope to do is learn from your mistakes and become a better captain. The interface is simple, and there's sadly nothing flashy about the game's many incidents, but it's an addictive chance to live out a teenage sci-fi fantasy. Developer: Subset GamesPrice: £7.99
