9. The Belly Of The Beast - Gears Of War 2

Environmental obstacles are nothing new in video games; they're an essential component of good level design. However, the Gears of War franchise took this to disgustingly new heights in its second instalment, which at one point sees Marcus Fenix and the rest of Delta-One get swallowed whole by a gigantic, city-sized worm.

Waking up, your mission is to traverse the exceedingly deadly inner workings of the worm, destroy its hearts, and escape. Along the way you encounter horrifying parasites, dodge digestive juices, and almost drown in massive pools of blood. The sickening experience comes to a close once all of the worm’s hearts are destroyed and it crashes to the ground, allowing Delta-One to chainsaw their way out.

This section is not just one of the highlights of Gears of War 2; it’s one of the most memorable action scenes in the whole series. Sure, it may not be the most objectively epic, but the situation the characters find themselves in is actually pretty terrifying. The entire ordeal is so effectively revolting to the point where you’ll want to take a shower after playing. No player leaves this action sequence quite the same, and that’s what makes it so great.
