In The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Link must stop the land of Hyrule being consumed by the Twilight Realm. When Link enters a region that is shrouded in Twilight, he turns into a wolf. While in this form, a creature from the Twilight Realm called Midna rides on Link's back and assists him in his adventures.

Midna is integral to the story and gameplay but she was a last minute addition. When Shigeru Miyamoto heard of the concept of Wolf Link, he was worried that players would get bored looking at a wolf’s back for a large portion of the game.

Basically, Midna was devised to make Link's back look less boring. This is crazy since Midna is a fundamental part of the story. She can warp Link through portals, walk through walls, use her hair to pull switches, create power fields, and attack nearby enemies. Last-minute additions are nothing new in gaming but they usually have a small impact. However, if Midna was removed from Twilight Princess, the entire game's structure would have been drastically different.
