Shigeru Miyamoto has a reputation for devising ideas and waiting years before he implements them into games. Ocarina of Time is well-known for its time-travel mechanic but Miyamoto wanted to utilise this idea in the first game. In the original Legend of Zelda, Link must track down the Triforce fragments to bring peace to Hyrule. These pieces were going to be computer chips and Link would have to travel into a medieval and futuristic time period to locate them.

Miyamoto was so adamant about implementing this idea, he named the hero Link to reference that he is tied or "linked" to different time periods. When the developers realised this mechanic was too difficult to program, Miyamoto tried again with the Super Nintendo game, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Sadly, he didn't get a chance to incorporate time-travel idea into the The Legend of Zelda franchise until Ocarina of Time.

Another big change made in the original game was the antagonist, Ganon. He is often depicted as bull-boar hybrid but he was originally going to be a vampire. This is why he shields himself when exposed to light and why he is vulnerable to Silver Arrows.
