5. Cortana (Halo)

In a series dominated by strong male characters, Cortana is the main female influence (despite being an artificial intelligence) on the series and thanks to a strong and interesting personality; she's also a highly popular supporting character. Often employed as the voice inside Master Chief's head, Cortana provides analysis and detail on the Halo Universe as well as simply being a friendly, chatty voice in unknown, alien worlds. She surprisingly comes with a lot of emotional attachment too; having been through nearly everything with the Master Chief, their relationship is a strong one and (most notably in Halo 3's imaginatively titled level 'Cortana') that relationship becomes a major factor in the overarching story of the series. Halo 4 puts Cortana's status into question (which hopefully will be explored in Halo 5 anyway) but it's highly unlikely that the Halo series will continue on without her; she's arguably even more important than Master Chief in the Halo universe. Admittedly, it's difficult to come up with a premise for a game suitable for Cortana (there's only so much a game based around an artificial intelligence can do) but perhaps with some out-of-the-box thinking and creativity from 343 Industries, we'll see a Cortana game that does the character justice.
