4. The Count Lucanor

The Count Lucanor
Ratalaika Games

Tired of his lifestyle and sick of being poor, young Hans sets of into the woods by himself.

As he gets deeper into the trees, Hans encounters strange humans and animals alike, and the longer the player is immersed in Hans' tale, the darker and more disturbing things become.

Like Uncanny Valley, the simple pixel art style stands in stark juxtaposition to the horror within.

Upon meeting a vampire/imp-like Kobold, Hans must solve puzzles to discover this mysterious creature's name; thus bestowing upon himself the illustrious title of Count Lucanor.

Sounds easy enough, I suppose.

However, the castle and grounds which this Kobold inhabits are home to some harrowing sights.

The old lady, unceremoniously thrashing her pet pig who, you soon realise, is actually her son, naked on all fours. The red-eyed goats walking on hind legs with blood-stained grins (can goats grin? Answers on a postcard).

With a limited inventory, and a field of vision restricted to the glare of the candles you place within the dark corridors, The Count Lucanor is played in a near-permanent state of tension and anxiety.

Whilst not excessively gory and practically devoid of jump scares, the Count Lucanor's disturbing, almost taboo content is what earns it a spot on this list.
