8. Forsaken Update - Destiny 2

Initially released as a pay-to-play title back in 2017, the reception to Destiny 2 was fairly positive, with a lot of praise given to its core gameplay, but many were quick to point out how it didn't feel too dissimilar to the original Destiny, and particular ire was shown at the fact that players had to pay real world money to really get into the meat of the game.

The similarities to its predecessor, as well as the financial implications of the game, meant that it was a slow-start for Destiny 2, with many players not seeing any real reason to jump over to the new game when the original was still there and offered virtually the same experience.

Enter the Forsaken expansion, which vastly overhauled the gameplay and offered up new missions, maps and a really cool PvP/PvE hybrid mode that added a lot of variety to the game. This expansion did see a marked upturn in the amount of players hopping aboard for some shooty-bang-bang good times, which was further bolstered the following year in 2019 when they sent the pay-to-play model to the shadow realm in favour of a free-to-play model that has seen immense success, with a new expansion planned for this winter.
