For those reading this who weren't around during the lead-up to No Man's Sky's release, you may not quite believe how much of a stir the game was causing.

Media outlets the world over were reporting on this insanely ambitious game that would allow players to discover and explore a near endless stream of unique planets, encountering new lifeforms and resources as they went so that they could better understand the universe and upgrade their own personal spaceship.

Then the game came out and everyone discovered that you can't sell a game on ambition alone - you actually need to give players something to do too.

That's not to say that No Man's Sky was a bad game on launch, but players soon realised that whilst the universe was near-endless in scope, the actual gameplay was dull, repetitive and didn't inspire the sense of wonder we'd been promised.

The developers at Hello Games did add more content over the next two years but nothing really enticed players back until the Beyond update - which saw huge improvements and attention given to the online multiplayer aspect of the game. This immediately drew in legions of players who were keen to explore the galaxy as a team and the game's still going strong now.
