10 More Insane Lies Told On Video Game Box Art
1. Atari 2600 (Chess) - A Game That Didn't Even Exist
The term 'serving suggestion' is rarely seen on video game boxes in the same way it might be on, say, a tin of sun-dried tomatoes, but perhaps it should be. That'd avoid the sort of deeply-brined pickle (serving suggestion) Atari found themselves in upon the launch of their iconic Atari VCS console, when a small bit of artistic license, at least apocrypally, left the company with their hams steamed (serving suggestion).
So the story goes, the VCS box's illustration of a knight playing piece left one eager consumer seriously chessed-off when he discovered no digital version of the board game was available for the system. Supposedly, the man sued Atari, forcing them to develop a chess game they'd previously had no intention of making. The result, if this tale is to be believed, was the excellent Video Chess. Check mate, Atari.
