Of all the 3D games in the GTA series, GTA IV is the one which gets it rather tight from fans. Rockstar decided to ditch a lot of the more overblown elements from previous titles, entrenching the fourth proper instalment in a sense of realism which hadn't been seen before, and many people hated them for it. Niko Bellic was a more reflective protagonist than the wildly entertaining people who had come before. There were similarities, such as him struggling with a difficult past and trying to carve a life for himself in a brand spanking new city, but overall the game was a much darker, serious affair. Even if many fans didn't really care for the story, Bellic was nonetheless an interesting man. Having committed terrible atrocities in "the old country", Niko was determined to try and put all of that behind him, but of course would find himself unable to shake old habits as he arrived in a revamped Liberty City. What followed was the tale of a man who is fated to kill, even if he doesn't really want to. It's fair that Rockstar should have told the story better, but at least the main character was interesting.
