9. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Kingdoms of Amalur is often compared to and overshadowed by games such as Fable, Skyrim, and The Witcher. This is a shame because Kingdoms offers such a great experience on its own. With a story crafted by author R. A. Salvatore, comic legend Todd McFarlane, and The Elder Scrolls' Ken Rolston, Kingdoms of Amalur represents the best of the western RPG genre. The game offers a large map and a character who has been revived from death and left without a predetermined fate. This gives the player freedom to make choices concerning perks and abilities, class systems, and more, all without being tied to these decisions throughout the whole game. The map is large, but retains a Fable-esque degree of order, striking a great balance between linear and non-linear gameplay. Kingdoms features polished voice acting, an arsenal of different weapons and abilities, and plenty of side quests to play through. Although not as large or immersive as a game like Skyrim, Kingdoms of Amalur is one of the best RPGs to grace this system. Unfortunately, though, we won't be seeing a sequel, as poor sales preceded a studio closure.
