1. Mario's Cap (The Mario Series)
Easily the most famous hat in video game history, Mario’s
cap has granted the moustachioed plumber many powers throughout the years, as
well as gave him the look that would define him as gaming’s most prominent
icon.
Mario has had a few names, like Jumpman and Mr Video, and a couple of professions, such as a carpenter, before evolving into his full form as the Italian plumber that we know and love today, but his cap has always been there.
Mario's red and blue colours helped him pop against the games backgrounds and a hat was put in place for animation purposes, as the developers needn’t worry about his eyebrows, forehead or hair.
By the time the second game rolled around Mario had his famous red M stamped on the front for the cover art and the rest is history.
In Super Mario Odyssey that dastardly no-gooder Bowser took Mario's favourite head warmer and threw it into his ships propeller, allowing Mario to try a variety of new styles including a sentient cap with the inspired name "Cappy.”
The image of Mario, cap and all, has served as Nintendo’s ambassador for almost 40 years, and long may he continue his reign.
