10 Most Mourned Sports Video Games Franchises
4. Matt Hoffman’s Pro BMX
Mat Hoffman’s Pro BMX cannot be accused of being the most original game of all time, clearly taking inspiration from the earlier Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games, even using a tweaked version of the engine used by their Activision stablemates. However, this was still a popular short series in its own right despite strong competition from Acclaim’s Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX.
The BMX video game era passed very quickly, with a great number of titles riding a wave of enthusiasm for extreme sports at the turn of the millennium. The last Mat Hoffman game would hit shelves in 2002. Months later rivals Acclaim would release BMX XXX, a game so controversial and commercially disappointing it would almost singlehandedly kill the sub-genre as well as play a significant role in the publisher’s bankruptcy a couple of years later. Hoffman’s association with the Tony Hawk’s series would continue, featuring heavily in 2005’s American Wasteland which introduced the BMX as an alternate to the skateboard. Unfortunately for fans, as far as pure BMX games go, this series remains its finest hour.
