10 Most Mourned Sports Video Games Franchises

5. TOCA

1997’s TOCA: Touring Car Championship for the PS1 was groundbreaking for the time, pushing the console graphically and adding a newfound sense of realism which was beyond what track racing games had shown up to this point. Unfortunately for developers Codemasters, Sony’s own Gran Turismo would be released a few months later, ultimately becoming the defining racing game and series of PlayStation until this day. Despite this, the TOCA series would continue strongly with 5 critically acclaimed sequels.

The TOCA series had always associated itself with the British Touring Car Championship, meaning the games had the advantage of a clear demographic of racing fans who may be interested, but rather limited its global appeal. As even interest in the sport in the UK began to wane in the 2000s, TOCA began to distance itself, before eventually going in a different direction altogether, with the game engine being incorporated into the Grid series as a more generic (if still very playable) racer.
