4. That Dragon, Cancer
Alright, nobody wants to dump on a game made by the parents of a boy who died from cancer, especially when that game chronicles the parents' heartbreaking experience of losing their child.
That said, That Dragon, Cancer is a game easier to respect and appreciate than it is to laud as a well-crafted work of art or entertainment.
The journey the game takes us on is undeniably powerful, but gameplay-wise it falls down hard due to poor mechanics that aren't enjoyable to play and ultimately just detract from what could've comfortably just been a solid walking simulator.
A Mario Kart-esque racing sequence, for example, both looks and plays horribly thanks to stiff animations, graphical clipping and poor controls. It's jarringly goofy compared to the emotionally devastating central narrative.
This is a case where less probably would've been more, and while certainly not a bad game, it's not the Earth-shattering masterwork that some proclaim it to be (and that 78 Metascore is about 10 points too generous).
