Sindel from Mortal Kombat was not a source of controversy within the franchise's community until her retcon in Mortal Kombat 11.

Up until this 2019 release, Sindel was considered a victim of terrible circumstances. She was originally the queen of a realm called Edenia that was invaded and conquered by Shao Kahn. In order to save Kitana, her daughter and heiress to Edenia, she unwillingly married Shao Kahn and obeyed his every command. Fans of the game loved this depiction of Sindel, as it made her look like a noble and caring person.

However, in Mortal Kombat 11, the writers decided to retcon Sindel into being an evil person from the start. In this version of events, Sindel was never brainwashed, and she secretly married Shao Kahn of her own free will so that the two of them could create the greatest power couple in existence.

Naturally, such a radical change didn't resonate well with many fans - it felt like a betrayal of their sympathies towards her original, tragic fate. However, not everyone felt this way about the retcon. The bad girl Sindel appealed to some fans, who considered her transformation to be an entertaining plot twist that took the franchise in an interesting direction.
