So awesome was NHL '94 that EA Sports have used the game's arcade-style appeal to sell later titles in the long-running ice hockey franchise. "It has the speed of '94", they cry, like that's all that matters in today's market. Hockey games have moved on towards simulation, and they're all the better for it.

That's not to say that NHL '94 is a bad game (saying so will leave many reaching for the pitchforks), it isn't. There's so much to enjoy here, but it's true that this slab of puck-mashing madness is dated. There's more fun to be had when playing against other humans rather than the CPU too, because that AI leaves a lot to be desired at times.

In a way, that only adds to the chaotic fun. Nobody can deny that handing a kid this game to play in 2017 would have them questioning your sanity though, and that's where '94 falls short. It's a classic, no doubt about that, but it's more a 'time and place' kind of thing.
