What's this? A good Mickey Mouse game?! Surely not. Well, it is, and anybody who has played even a few moments from Castle Of Illusion will vouch for the game's fun factor. What's more, before Sonic The Hedgehog was released the following year, Mickey was Sega's finest platform hero.

1990 was a good year for the mouse in general, because he also appeared in Adventures In The Magic Kingdom, an often overlooked game on the NES. Over on Sega's more powerful console, Mickey could be seen swinging, jumping, running and generally delighting players with a charming quest to save his beloved Minnie. The whole game is soaked in that classic Disney charm.

The Toyland levels in particular are just magical. We defy anybody to play Castle without a big smile on their face, it's that kind of fuzzy goodness that just makes you feel good inside. If that sounds a little too gushing, it's only because Castle Of Illusion is a classic. What a shame Fantasia couldn't follow up on it the next year.
