That darn hedgehog, he had to go and steal Mickey's thunder. The original Sonic The Hedgehog is a landmark moment in video gaming, but it can't hold a candle to the sequel, and that's the truth. Sega improved their blue mascot in every conceivable way, even bringing a twin-tailed fox (fittingly called Tails, but also known as Miles) along for the ride.

It's the speed of Sonic 2 that wins out in the end, as well as new abilities like being able to 'Spin Dash' by curling Sonic up into a ball before attacking. This solved the first game's problem of being hit by enemies suddenly appearing on-screen. What a masterstroke addition from Sega.

Perhaps the only thing holding Sonic 2 back is the dodgy co-op play. Controlling Tails is a frustrating experience, largely because the second player will find themselves doing little other than aiding the first in boss battles. That aside, Sonic's sequel was sheer Sega wizardry.
