10 Most Underrated N64 Games Ever
6. Blast Corps
The unsung classic in Rare’s impressive N64 oeuvre, Blast Corps is a deceptively simple proposition. Your aim: to smash up all and sundry in the path of a van containing a nuclear weapon. You are given a number of vehicles with which to do the job, and other than that, you’re left to your own devices. Your goal is only to destroy.
It sounds less than the recipe for a great action/puzzler, but Rare had faith in their concept, and rightfully so. It is, quite plainly, always fun to smash things up, whether in a game or otherwise. The thrills may be a little plain to a modern gamer, but the cunningly designed, often challenging puzzle-based levels are there to grab you even when you get tired of the sheer joy of breaking things (which will be a long way into the game, if it happens at all).
Rare soon migrated from this to the platformers they’re best remembered for, but the Rare Replay collection showed that there’s a lot of life in this game left. More than anything else, it makes you pine for the Rare/Nintendo partnership of old - what a time that was.
