10 Most Underrated N64 Games Ever
3. Shadow Man
The N64 was known as a family friendly console, and for the most part that’s fair. The games were accessible to all, with little of the adult persuasion. 1999’s Shadow Man is the exception to this rule, one of the console’s most grown up games, and a rare foray into outright horror.
A game taking place mostly in an insane asylum built in an alternate hell dimension, this is a significant step away from Yoshi’s Story. Shadow Man sees you take the role of Michael LeRoi, a voodoo bounty hunter of sorts, who must harvest the souls of killers in order to prevent the impending apocalypse.
Grossout sound effects and swampy, creepy backdrops give the game its atmosphere, and the cool over/underworld mechanic works well. The scares themselves haven’t dated so well, unsurprisingly, but the gameplay and story remain innovative.
Along with the handful of Resident Evil releases, Shadow Man was a must have for the N64-owning horror fan, and were it to receive a remaster like the Capcom franchise, odds are it would go up in a lot of people’s estimations.
