10 Most Underrated N64 Games Ever
2. Jet Force Gemini
Perhaps the best developer in the N64’s life cycle, Rare were able to turn their hand to anything. Best known for their platformers and first person shooters, Jet Force Gemini fell a little by the wayside. An innovative and challenging minor classic, it is worth revisiting.
Rare had a knack for world building and development, and with a whole solar system of alien-riddled planets to cut through, they excel themselves here. The planets, and the aliens dwelling on them, are typically colourfully ad charmingly rendered - only this time, you get to graphically blast apart anything that moves.
Taking cues from arcade shoot em ups, Jet Force Gemini is a surprisingly gruesome game, with heads and limbs scattering as you tear through space. The intertwining levels, used to great effect in Banjo Tooie, give the game significant replay value.
With three cool characters (including a rocket powered, gun mounted pooch) and an impressive variety of play styles, Jet Force Gemini has a great deal going for it. With its contrasting vivid gore and cartoony graphics, it struggled to find the right audience, but it remains an original and enjoyable outlier for Rare.
