4. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Thank God for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, a drastic reboot that actually saved and reinvigorated the dying series.

By the time RE7 came around, the series had gone completely off the rails. As every sequel upped the stakes from the previous game, it was almost inevitable that the series went from careful resource management and puzzle-solving to, by RE6, uppercutting monsters with super karate.

Resident Evil had been so extreme for so long that, just because of its first-person perspective, RE7 seemed like a much more drastic reboot than it actually was. After all, it once again saw a desperate, lone protagonist struggling to survive and solving more puzzles than fighting enemies.

On top of that, it was actually as scary as all the marketing claimed the original was.
