10 Movies Based On Video Games That Misinterpreted Their Source

8. Resident Evil

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dc5iiT0f1s Now before you all get up in arms, I'm not talking about the two animated films that have come out as they seem to at least feature the same characters as the games. When you look at the 5 Hollywood films, though, it seems the writers have been picking and choosing what to take from the games. I quite enjoyed the films as they're action packed zombie films, but when you're going to base a film of as big a franchise as Resident Evil, try to stick to the story. The first film can possibly be excused as it does set up the events that occur in Racoon City, but it's from the second film onwards that we seem to jump away from the storyline of the games. Resident Evil: Apocalypse seemed to be the movie adaptation of RE3, yet rather than show Jill Valentine as the main character, she seems to be more of a sidekick. Whilst we do end up seeing Nemesis throughout the film there seems to be no mention of the GraveDigger at all. In fact, there doesn't seem to be much in common at all between RE3 and the film at all. They're both set in Racoon city before it's destroyed by a nuclear missile and they both feature nemesis. That's pretty much it, really. I can understand that you can't exactly copy everything from the game but don't call it Resident Evil, then. Resident Evil: Extinction seems to veer completely away from the storyline of the games with the only similarities being that some of the characters from the game pop up in the film. Resident Evil has never had a worldwide apocalypse - sure zombies have popped up in other parts of the world in the newer games but we've never had the problem of having the whole word overun by zombies as proclaimed by the film. In Resident Evil: Afterlife they do try to reign in the movie and bring it back to its RE roots by introducing Chris Redfield, but unlike the first game and Code Veronica, he doesn't seem to be a main character. In fact, if we look at all of the games, there seems to be no mention of Alice whatsoever. I know it's easier to have one main protagonist throughout the films, but why not just call the films something else and claim the RE games were an inspiration?
