10 Multiplayer Video Games RUINED By Microtransactions

5. Modern Warfare Remastered

Activision

If Activision tying the original release of Modern Warfare Remastered to an unrelated Call of Duty title didn't already start getting the pitchforks sharpened and noob tubes loaded, the handling of MWR's transaction system was like napalm on an oil spill.

The game, which originally released in 2007, had many of its original maps and weapon skins tucked away in randomised loot boxes. Content that was included in the original, as well as the old DLC pack, was carved out with Activision's gold plated hatchet of avarice and sold off in smaller chunks. It was a display of miserly contempt that made Dicken's Scrooge look like a brand ambassador for UNICEF.

Players, like a mobilised SEAL squad, quickly organised several boycotts of the release until Activision fixed their ham fisted attempt to extract even more COD Points from the bloodstream of its audience.

Eventually, the company did relent, releasing the Remaster as its own game. The damage had already been done, however. What could have been a trip down memory lane had decayed into robbery on nostalgia avenue, and the Modern Warfare multiplayer stagnated.

At least they left the single player alone, though. Captain Price's moustache bristles look better than ever.
