10 Multiplayer Video Games RUINED By Microtransactions

6. Evolve

GTA Online Casino
Turtle Rock

Even before release, Evolve was no stranger to controversy, having grown (in)famous for its excessive pre order and DLC material. When the game finally did release, and it was revealed that many of Evolve's customisable options were hidden behind a paywall, fans were monstrously upset (no pun intended).

It didn't help that the base game felt lacklustre, with fans who had only bought the standard edition deprived of four hunter classes and many of the high level monsters shown in the trailers, all of which were lo cked behind a gloating credit card request. Dreams of buying the game and devouring humans as Barney the Magic Dinosaur were shattered all over the world.

Evolve was, in many ways, a victim of its time. Nowadays skins and other aesthetic options being a chargeable extra is the norm, but when Evolve released in early 2015, such slimy practises were relatively unheard of. Sales of the game reflected this, with Evolve quickly disappearing into the foliage of obscurity like a third tier Wraith.

Nowadays, Evolve's free to play, and stands as a ghoulish lesson for those looking to take a chance with excessive monetisation. Beware, developers, here be Dragons... Or Behemoths, or whatever.
