The Artful Escape developers Beethoven and Dinosaur are back with their sophomore release, Mixtape - another trippy, vibes-heavy, music-infused adventure game.
This coming-of-age story takes place in 1990s America and revolves around three friends as they head to a party on their last night together as a group. A mixtape of memories sends players on a kaleidoscopic journey through their most formative experiences.
These memories take many forms, from skateboarding levels to baseball mini-games, each of them scored to a bevy of period banger tunes from the likes of DEVO, Roxy Music, Lush, The Smashing Pumpkins, Iggy Pop, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, and The Cure.
This soundtrack of bonafide bops is matched by an eye-wateringly beautiful, painterly aesthetic which employs the stop-motion animated style that's become so popular in recent animated films and also video games such as South of Midnight.
The game is still on track for a 2025 release, though given that Annapurna didn't confirm the date at Summer Games Fest, it's probably going to land later in the year.
