Everyone remembers the beginning of their Pokémon journey. Waking up in your room in Pallet Town; heading downstairs to have a quick conversation with your mother; before heading off to Professor Oak's lab to make that all important choice: Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle? Pokémon games may have undergone constant change and improvement from that magical first section of Red and Blue but nothing has captured our imagination that dramatically since. With the arrival of the Game Boy Advance, portable gaming had never looked so exciting and it's unsurprising that Nintendo would return to Red and Blue with a whole host of new features and improvements. Enter FireRed and LeafGreen. One important new feature was colour; the original Game Boy titles were only in black and white thanks to the limitations of the hardware. Kanto was finally brought to life with the colourful designs that Pokémon fans had grown accustomed to. Your character's journey was also extended post-game with a new series of islands added, as well as the inclusion of Pokémon from the generations that followed Red and Blue; adding more to see, explore and more importantly, catch. Most excitingly for fans though was the inclusion of the Game Boy Advance Wireless Adapter with the game; this marked the first time that trading and battling Pokémon with friends went wireless (something that we very much take for granted nowadays). The Wireless Adapter was released too late on in the GBA's life to make a significant improvement for the console but, as Pokémon games used the idea of linking consoles far more than others, it made sense to bundle it with FireRed and LeafGreen. Updating a game that's already incredibly addictive and fun is sure to be a winning move and with the amount of content added to FireRed and LeafGreen, Nintendo definitely deserves recognition for their ability to create fantastic remakes whilst keeping a series feeling fresh and innovative. What are your thoughts on video game remakes? Would you rather developers worked on new titles or do you enjoy revisiting older gems that you may have forgotten about? I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
