Before Saints Row IV, the Saints Row series was the most successful competitor of Grand Theft Auto. After its release, it became a sad reminder of what happens when the writers push the envelope too far.

Back in its hayday, Saints Row enjoyed the reputation of being a wackier and more lighthearted version of GTA games. Where other games in the genre failed trying to replicate the titan of crime sims, Saints Row thrived thanks to being a genuine alternative to the more serious GTA.

The series knew how to blend its criminal elements with comedy, and this worked well for both its gameplay and story. The Saints were doing more outrageous things than your average Grand Theft Auto protagonist, battled more cartoonish villains, and their shenanigans kept escalating to more ridiculous levels.

Until the ridiculousness reached a critical level with Saints Row IV and its plot of aliens destroying the world.

Afterward, the series lost not only most of its beloved characters but also the possibility of creating a sequel.

After all, how are you going to write a story about a criminal enterprise without the planet the said enterprise does its business on?
