10 Perfect Video Game Stories (That Were Ruined By The Sequels)
2. Somehow The Invasion Returned - Gears Of War 4
Gears of War 4 and 5 are generally hated among the fans of the series, and that's because, compared to the original trilogy, they stick out like sore thumbs.
Their tone is different, their characters less engaging, but more importantly, their appearance undermines the ending of Gears of War 3.
Gears 3 resolved most of the major plot points of the series. The invasion is defeated, the COG seems to be on the verge of experiencing a political shift, and the main characters are prepared to build a new future out of the sacrifice of their fallen comrade.
Then Gears 4 arrives, and suddenly none of this matters. The Locust magically reappears, the COG comes back to full power as if nothing happened, and everything your team has accomplished in the past is swept under the rug to reuse the same ideas, but with less of a reason for them to be a thing.
The latter half of the series is a complete disservice to the storyline of the original three games that perhaps would've made for an interesting side series of its own if it didn't build its legacy off the back of its predecessors without actually paying attention to them.
