10 Phenomenal Games With AWFUL Stories

7. Destiny

Batman Arkham Knight Story
Bungie

Playing the first few hours of Destiny upon its release in 2014 was mind-blowing. It was smooth, exciting, and - bar the now infamous performance of Peter Dinklage as Ghost - a seemingly perfect next-gen game. But, the longer it went on, the more repetitive it became, and after some time, you found yourself thinking, "Is there even a story here at all?"

Destiny's narrative is barebones, to say the least. It begins with you being awoken from death by the previously mentioned Ghost. This small floating machine takes you on the path to becoming a successful Guardian, protecting Earth and the Last City. From there, the game turns into a hodgepodge of battling against aliens in a narrative that takes you to multiple locations but lacks any defining features.

The game's generic narrative matches its gameplay, as while it's nice and shiny on the surface, it doesn't take long to notice how hollow it is. In fairness, the lore is pretty great. The thing is, you've got to get creative to find it, looking at small details and external sources, as it's not presented clearly in this game. As such, the "story" of Destiny feels like it's barely even there. It wasn't until the DLC and sequel that Destiny even bothered with legitimate storytelling.
