10 Phenomenal Games With AWFUL Stories

3. Neon White

Batman Arkham Knight Story
Angel Matrix

For those of you who haven't played Neon White, just know that speed and adrenaline are the name of the game. This thrilling title tasks you with speedrunning every level, getting through areas as quickly as possible, finding new shortcuts to shave off your time, and mastering high-octane mechanics.

In contrast, the story packs as much speed and thrill as an old tortoise running a marathon.

The story revolves around the titular Neon White, a sinner who is promised a place in Heaven for competing in the Ten Days of Judgement competition. This tournament tasks White and an array of other Neons with killing all the demons infesting Heaven, with the one who takes out the most receiving a spot in the pearly kingdom.

As you can see here, the concept is pretty original. However, the moments in between levels - played out in visual novel style - tank the game's story. The writing is deliberately juvenile, leaving you constantly rolling your eyes and cringing. Plus, the copious amount of text is a chore to sit through, especially when you get so used to moving quickly. It leaves you speedrunning through the skip dialogue option in no time.
