10 Pointless Video Game Mechanics Nobody Used
2. Torches - Dark Souls 2
This is less of an unwanted inclusion and more a failed implementation. Dark Souls 2 was supposed to make use of a new lighting system that would shroud a lot of the game in impenetrable darkness. The player would have to decide between a protective shield or using a torch to see better.
However, before release, the game received a massive technical downgrade and the impenetrable darkness became a mild annoyance. The darkest areas in the game were light enough to easily be strolled through. And as a result, the all-important torches became... worthless. And no one used them. Despite the fact that they had their own segregated portion in the inventory, no one really cared for them.
And so players neglected to use what was supposed to be one of the games major selling points. They sorted some of the darkness in the Scholar of the First Sin remaster, but most people who played that had played the original and knew the dark and foreboding areas like the back of their hands.
