10 Powerful Video Game Endings That Gave You Chills
7. Mafia II
Mafia II is one of the best crime games of all time, wholly under-appreciated when it released but home to a surprisingly complex set of characters and narratives. It tells the story of Vito and Joe, two small-time crooks who climb the ladder of the criminal underworld until they've got everything they could ever dream of.
The problem is, no matter how much power they accrue, they'll never be viewed in the eyes of any of the family bosses who control the city as worthy. This fact is exacerbated even further when they pursue the drug trade, which they were explicitly told was off limits, and find themselves caught between two mob bosses, Falcone and Vinci. Trying to wrangle their way out of certain death, Vito brokers a deal with the latter to kill Falcone in exchange for his life, while Joe meets with Falcone, who offers to spare his life if he kills Vito, an offer he refuses.
The two team up and murder Falcone, being picked up in two cars afterwards to celebrate with Vinci's men. It's at this point it's revealed that the deal only covered Vito's life, and that they still have to pay the price of causing so much conflict in the first place. In the final shot, Vito has to watch while Joe's car veers off down another road, in the knowledge it's the last time he'll see his lifelong friend again.
