8. Prince Of Persia (2008)

Prince of Persia 2008 is far from the best game in the franchise, and its divisive art style and streamlined gameplay was certainly a lot for fans to take in at the time, but it has an absolute cracker of a resolution. The entire story is about the Prince and companion Elika attempting to stave off the corruption about to engulf the world, by restoring power to the Tree of Life.

Somewhere along the way, Elika is killed, and the Prince is given a choice. He can either restore the Tree and rid the world of the corruption, or use the remaining force to save his companion, thus damning everyone, and everything, else. It's not very heroic, but the Prince actually opts for the latter option, bringing Elika back to the land of the living while the darkness slowly covers everything around them.

It's a tragic ending, but one which is undeniably surprising and impactful. Of course, not everyone was on board with the dour note, and the developers later released a DLC that retconned this tragedy and transformed the Prince into a hero. But let's forget that ever happened...
