10 Promising Video Game Sequels That Completely Killed Their Franchises

9. Prototype 2

Although there was plenty of hype surrounding the initial release of Prototype 2, the game released without much fanfare and didn't really seem to make any impact.

Part of this was due to the gameplay remaining nigh-on identical and not really advancing the original's already overused set of powers. One of the biggest issues with the first Prototype was how repetitive the gameplay was, something which definitely wasn't helped by the sequel feeling more like a glorified skin-swap.

Prototype 2 also aimed to feature a more empathetic and interesting story with a brand new protagonist, James Heller. It didn't work, and Heller ended up being as angsty and uninteresting as Alex Mercer, with added pointless aggression. Overall this simply made it feel as though the series didn't have much life left, which also led to the downsizing of the developer, Radical Entertainment.

A true shame.
